Why? nUbuntu refers to its series that way, but I haven't seen any other distributions that do. (Ubuntu certainly doesn't, for example.)

Meanwhile, the (approved!) spec <https://dev.launchpad.net/RegistrySimplifications> says: "In the Web UI, .codename should be used before a series is released, and .version afterward (though the codename should still be mentioned on the Overview page). This should be done using a generated property, which should be called .displayname for compatibility with other object types."

The codename is very highly advertised, and developers seem to grasp what "Edgy" is much better than 6.10.
Changing the name after release is also a big potential for confusion.

The codename is not really advertised at all on the official CDs, either. A casual user would be looking for the version number as on the CD, and as Martin says, developers will be looking for the code name,

Showing both the version and the codename seems appropriate.

I would tag this 'easy' but it will be a grind to find all places (if its not already done that is)
