Support for PEAR channels

Bug Description

For PHP-based projects that are developed on Launchpad it would be nice to have a PEAR channel server where releases can be published.

PEAR channels provide a robust and effective way of distributing PHP components and applications. All the user needs to do is to type a single "pear install channel/package" command and the requested package will be installed.

Hi,

this sounds like a very good idea...further more it would be easier for distros using launchpad to prepare packages out of the pear repository...

I'm +1 for this :)

I wonder if this is possible from the LP side in a sane time frame.

LP Devs, what do you think?

Re-assigning to foundations to get their feedback about this infrastructure. AFAICT, there are no plans to implement such a feature.
