Person bug lists should state that only open bugs are shown

Bug #260019 reported by Graham Binns

Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
Launchpad itself

Undecided
Unassigned

Bug Description

If you look at https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/~gmb/+subscribedbugs you'll see only open bugs (the same is true for +assignedbugs, +commentedbugs, +reportedbugs, etc. and also for the index, which shows all related bugs).

The headers for +subscribed bugs, though, just says "Bugs Graham Binns is subscribed to." Nowhere is it mentioned that it's only *open* bugs that are shown.

The title should read "Open bugs Graham Binns is subscribed to" (s/is subscribed to/$relationship/ where appropriate.

I agree, I spent quite a bit of time the other night trying to subscribe to bug # 204996, which on its page had plenty of subscribers and a "+ Subscribe" button which would lead anyone to the impression that subscribing is completely possible. But under my own account no matter how many times I would add it, remove it add it again, the bug would not appear in my subscriptions - because it was closed, I didn't realise that at the time.

A suggestion:

If its not typically possible to subscribe to closed bugs why isn't the subscribe option removed from closed bugs and instead a message put in its place saying "This bug is closed and hence subscriptions are disabled".

It's perfectly possible to subscribe to closed bugs. For example,
there may be a continuing conversation on one of those bugs about
whether it should be closed or not. However, closed bugs don't show up
by default in the bugs list because for the majority of cases closed
bugs are no longer of interest.

Then out of interest how do I subscribe to bug # 204996 or see it in my bugs list, I'd like to. Its still a very active bug and because the fix is being released for Intrepid it will be while before the conversation stops.

John, you will still get email notifications when it changes. Is that not enought to satisfy this specific use?

Fair enough, thats ok. But when I want to come back and look at this bug in a few weeks time and I've forgotten the bug number, and description how do I find it. Being subscribed is a handy way of saving it as a favourite in a sense. If there is a way of saving bugs as favourites then I'll do it but the only way I know how to track bugs I've written in is by subscribing so they'll appear under my profile.

There's currently no way of actually doing that, unfortunately. There are two ways this could be addressed, though:

  - Saving a per-user filter for his main bug listing, which in combination with bug 28697 would allow you to filter stuff out.
  - Personal bug bookmarks, which would allow you to select bugs which you wanted to monitor, and which would be orthogonal to subscription.

I think the former is much more interesting than the latter -- I am loathe to add another type of subscription just because of a UI bug. The former isn't filed as a bug today either (hint hint)!

I completely agree with your second proposal, but would it be a big deal to implement. Or another proposal: Under the "List subscribed bugs" in our personal account there could be possibly be two sections - Open and Closed bugs. I don't think people should lose track of the bugs in Launchpad they follow just because something closes up. Especially if your particular Linux distribution doesn't auto-update.
