Bug Description

In https://bugs.launchpad.net/~kitterman/+bugs?advanced=1 I don't find a way just to search for bugs in Ubuntu. That's really all I care about most of the time.

This is currently impossible; bug 245798 when fixed will permit searching for ubuntu only bugs but doesn't guarantee it will be brain-dead trivial; this bug is therefore about making it brain-dead trivial.

Hobbsee's right, that would give you only Ubuntu bugs.

However, I get the feeling that what you mean is something like this:

 1. Go to bugs.launchpad.net/~kitterman
 2. Select "Search for bugs in distro / package / project"
 3. Enter "Ubuntu" and hit search.
 4. Get Ubuntu bugs related to you back.

Right?

No. I don't want to have type into a box. I'd like a check box that ideally I'd have a user preference to remember I want it checked by default.

To that end it would make more sense for you to be able to go to http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?advanced=1 and check a box labelled "Bugs related to me." Would that suit your purposes?

No. Because bugs related to me is seriously broken (there are other bugs open
about that).

What I'm suggesting is that Launchpad's vision of lets mash all the data
together and it'll all be cool doesn't fit my needs as a user. With the
exception of bugs I file against Launchpad and external bugs that are linked
to Ubuntu bugs (and those I get from within the bug) I virtually never care
about anything else.

More and more I see irrelevant results that make Launchpad harder to use. I
understand that distro developers are a low priority for Launchpad
development, but that doesn't make our needs any less valid.

And yes, Ubuntu is a special case. How many other major distributions are
using Launchpad? If some other distro moves to Launchpad, add a check box
for them too.

That comment is pretty suprising given the fact that ubuntu is a very
intersting special case for launchpad.

please reconsider this statement.

I'll rephrase it:

It doesn't make sense to me to just stick a checkbox in there for
Ubuntu when we have other distros registered - there must be a nicer
way to do it (I just don't know what that is yet).

Although Ubuntu is by far the largest distribution that Launchpad
supports, and its users are by far the most numerous, there are others
registered in Launchpad, and some of those use Launchpad to track
bugs. Although it would be very easy to add an Ubuntu-only checkbox to
address this bug, that's not necessarily the right thing to do.

On the other hand it may turn out that I'm wrong and that bunging an
"Ubuntu bugs only" checkbox in there is the only reasonable way to
address this, but I'd rather investigate a more accommodating solution
first.

You are disagreeing over a pretty small UI quibble. The summary of this bug report is:

  - For personal bug listings it is currently impossible to restrict to bugs in a specific project or distribution
  - To restrict bugs, we'd need to know what project or distribution you want to restrict on
  - The bug reporters care mostly about Ubuntu

It /is/ somewhat silly to special-case Ubuntu when we could make every end-user's life easier by remembering what his "preferred projects' are and providing shortcuts to filter on those projects. That's might be a separate bug that allows persisting that information, but potentially we could use the user's Most Active In list (based on cached Karma, which is a quick query) for a decent approximation of what those projects might be.

I might point out, though, that you could even provide an initial fix that all it did was allowed you to tack on a special &project=Ubuntu parameter to the URL. You'll need that to implement the backend for the option I suggest above, but at least Scott can store a bookmark or two.

And Reinhard, take it easy on pushing Graham (or any developer when they want to find a more generic solution) -- he wants to help you, but he also needs to work within some basic Launchpad policies which do require us to think carefully before placing an Ubuntu-specific feature in our codebase. In pretty much every case there's something we can do to make Launchpad as convenient as using a standalone bug tracker, but it does take a little more effort.

In defense of siretart, I took the initial response pretty negatively too.
Solve it generally or solve it specifically is from my perspective an
implementation detail. I recognize Launchpad has a broader vision than
Ubuntu, but it'd be nice to have that vision not get in the way of distro
development.

Graham,

I'm sorry if my comment in this bug appeared to you not helpful. If you
felt insulted or mistreated, please accept my apologies. What I actually
wanted to point out has been clarified by Kiko and Scott, namely that
for ubuntu developers, the personal bugpages are not really helpful
right now. The analysis that kiko did in this bug seems perfect valid to
me.

I normally try to refrain from this type of comment, but it's been well over a year now since the last activity and I'd like to register my vote that the personal bug pages become increasingly irrelevant as a way to conventiently accompany bugs I was interested in (reported, comments, etc.) over their life time. By now, there are just too many that are fixed in Ubuntu, but still open in Debin, for example. A lot of times, those bugs are actually fixed in Debian as well, but Launchpad seems to choke on updating their status.
