Cannot set group contact address to a valid email address

I have attempted to set a group contact address to a Sourcehut mailing list address, which is a valid email address. However when I attempt to add it, it isn't accepted and states it isn't a valid email address. The address is in the format: ~<email address hidden>. I guess the tilde and forward slash aren't that common in a lot of email addresses but perfectly valid.
