uninformative error when lacking permission to create git repositories

I just got the following error when git pushing to a new remote:

    fatal: protocol error: unexpected 'ERR '

After looking around on code.launchpad.net/${my_private_project} I noticed some text telling me that I lacked permission to create repositories and to check the sharing page. I changed the sharing type for my team to "All" and then it worked.

Ideally this would be reported back to git directly.
