Software updater fails to connect in 16.04

Bug Description
Whenever trying to update software using the Xubuntu 16.04 Software Updater GUI, I get a message that it failed to download the repository information. This happens whether I am connected to the router via WiFi or Ethernet. But, there is no problem to upgrade or udpate using the terminal, or browse the web. The hardware is an Apple v3.1 Intel dual core CPU with 4 GB of RAM.
