Binary package hint: kfax

How to reproduce:

* Look at a fax

* Use "Print" (you can print to a PDF to see the effect!)

Notice that the printout is garbled.

Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages

This has been reported in Debian BTS at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=291352

- Open an TIF file containing an fax upside down
- Use "flip page" ("Seite umklappen") to see the page correctly
- go to print

What you get is an rather strange printout: The pixels are printed right to
left instead of left to right in small blocks of perhaps 8 Pixels.

rotating the image by 90 degree twice does result in the correct printout -
as rotating the paper after printing also does :-)

Confirming this bug.

Setting priority to "LO" (because: fipping works well for viewing on screen; printout in unflipped mode works without problem, and flipping the paper should be easy; flipping can be done in "kview" for TIFFs as well *AND* the printout of flipped TIFFs from kview works flawlessly...)

Which kfax are you talking about? The one from KDE 4.x in Ubuntu 8.10 oder KDE 3.x in Ubuntu 8.10?

This is just great, I checked packages.ubuntu.com to find:

Package kfax

hardy (graphics): G3/G4 fax viewer for KDE [universe]
4:3.5.9-0ubuntu1: amd64 i386

hardy-backports (graphics): G3/G4 fax viewer for KDE [universe]
4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy1: amd64 i386

intrepid (graphics): G3, G32, and G4 fax viewer for KDE 4 [universe]
4:3.5.9really3.3.6-kde4.1.1-0ubuntu2: amd64 i386

So, the package in intrepid is actually OLDER than hardy-backports.

The version I have here is:
ii kfax 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy1 G3/G4 fax viewer for KDE

The bug is still present in 4:3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy1

The version in Intrepid is really 3.3.6, which is the version distributed with KDE 4.1.1.
The one in hardy backports is an older version that was shipped with KDE 3.5.10.
Could you test with the Intrepid package?

Flipped a page, printed it, alas: Prints only a blank page. Dunno why that is, but I switched to GNOME to keep my sanity.

Development of kfax was abandoned by KDE approx 2-3 years ago, and hasn't been touched since, therefore, unfortunately this bug will have to be closed as I don't see any chance of this ever being fixed. I'm sure there is a suitable replacement in the Ubuntu repos, if not file a new bug report requesting it, or if you can find an open-source version of something like kfax (with source-code) that we don't already have, I'm sure someone can package it up for us.
Thank you again for reporting this to us, and sorry we couldn't help any further.
