Bug Description

After upgrading from KDE SC 4.7.4 to 4.8 I'm unable to log out. I just end up with a black monitor - well two actually - and a movable cursor. During log out krunner crashes if that is relevant.

Added .xsession-errors.

BTW: Nepomuk was disabled because it produced a 44GB .xsession-errors file. I first thought that was the problem, but it seems to be another issue which I'll report later.

Maybe I should add that this is not just the annoyance of having to switch to a console and restart kdm, but also that I loose settings which are not synced, my monitor setup and session managements

I think this is well known, long standing KDM problem.

For me, logout always worked with fglrx driver but never with opensource driver. T

For me, logout always worked with fglrx driver but never with opensource driver. To make it work I always had to edit kdmrc file (/etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc) and uncomment line "#TerminateServer=true". You have to reboot to make changes take effect.

Sorry for previous post, I am a bit sleepy :)

I had that uncommented on a previous install, but totally forgot where it was. Thanks for reminding me - now it's enabled again :-)
On this box I haven't had any problems with the standard open source radeon driver. After upgrading to 4.8 it even seems to have enabled blur even though I had it explicitly disabled.

One should think that 'sudo service kdm restart' would be enough to enable the setting? Well, I'll see what happens. I wont do any desktop customizations until then.

Now I'll better write that setting on a Post-It note :-P

Thanks for reporting this. This is really a known driver bug (bug 651294 I think) and we'll probably enable TerminateServer=true for 12.04 by default as a workaround. I'll leave this open to see if we'll backport that to oneiric.

Closing this as it's ancient and we did change that for 12.04
