Bug Description

I just upgraded my Kubuntu 10.10 installation to KDE 4.6 <http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-sc-4.6>, and now I can't log in to KDE. I restarted after the install was finished, and I got a message stating that KDE was no longer a login option. Indeed, failsafe (and default) are now my only login options.

Others have reported the same problem <http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1675894>.

Also affects me, although I didn't actually let apt install the packages since there were so many broken dependencies. This seems to be a tendency with the KDE releases - huge dependency problems during the first few days until things get sorted out. I just wish they wouldn't release until it really is ready ...

Looks like things are working again after I apt-get installed kubuntu-desktop, it had been removed during the upgrade (why?)

I filed a duplicate (I didn't find this report at the time) at https://bugs.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/+bug/708530 that has a bit more detail.

I had none of the broken dependencies reported by Steve, though.

I tried again after reading Leon's comment about kubuntu-desktop but kubuntu-desktop was still on my machine so instead I ran:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure kubuntu-desktop

...and all was well but this is a nasty bug that surely should have been caught.

Could this be the reason why when I upgraded to KDE 4.6 yesterday and rebooted, I was told that:
xsession: unable to launch "" x session --- "" not found

And had to click the cancel button to continue to the desktop?

Full error message is:
xsession: unable to launch "" x session --- "" not found; falling back to default session.

This issue affects me too.
"sudo dpkg-reconfigure kubuntu-desktop" didn't help.
Currently only manually execution of "startx" allow me to access to desktop.

Sorry. Seems like "sudo dpkg-reconfigure kubuntu-desktop" allowed to select "KDE plasma desktop" on login screen and now it's loading automaticly.

I can confirm both the problem and the solution "sudo dpkg-reconfigure kubuntu-desktop".

This only happened on on of my three pcs having with fglrx driver, neither with Intel nor with nvidia.

affects: ubuntu → kdebase (Ubuntu)

Do those that don't have a "KDE Plasma Workspace" entry in the Xsession list in KDM please check if they have kdebase-workspace-data installed? And if no attach their /var/log/apt/history.log so we can check where it went missing?

I got this issue too upgrading Kubuntu 10.10 with KDE 4.6 from PPA's backport: black screen, x errors,...

I tried a lot of thing to understand the origin of the problem (error message was not very usefull).

The problem was linked to the new kdm theme. It was triying to use ethais (previous defaut KDM theme). Ethais folder and background .png seems exists but are corrupted files (/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/ethais). All needed part of ethais are not in the folder (and are, in this state, in the last 4.6 kde package of KDM -purge and reinstal kdm package dont change anything)...

To use the new 4.6 kdm theme, i changed manualy "ethais" to "horos" in /etc/kde4/kdm/kdmrc

After that, and rebooting kdm worked fine...

(similar issue about kdm: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase-workspace/+bug/517803)

(In my configuration -nvidia chipset-, i also edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to charge the "nouveau" module...)

I also have the problem expressed in this bug. I've tried to uninstall kdm and remove /etc/kde4/kdm, and then to reinstall kdm. The result is that now /etc/kde4/kdm is empty, albeit "dpkg -L kdm" shows files in this directory. Could there be a bug in the install script somewhere?

Thank you!

Hello!

I also had this bug. I installed Kubuntu 10.10 a couple of months ago with KDE 4.5.1. I tried to upgrade to KDE 4.6 yesterday, but it told me that "ethais" is not found... (exactly what Alexis was saying).

I have dual boot Kubuntu 10.10//WIn 7 Ultimate and found another way to upgrade to KDE 4.6 beside the KPacketKit used yesterday.

 1. I re-installed Kubuntu 10.10 again today
 2. On Konsole:
           sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
           sudo apt-get update
           sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

 3. Log out and log in. It worked for me. Please note that I am a newbie to Kubuntu, Ubuntu - anything related to Linux, so I don't know how to help you if this isn't working...

I got the same error.

After getting into the session, I went to "system setting", and click the "login" icon.

I chose the new theme as my kdm, and everything has been working great since.

Thanks,
Mark
