Bug Description

I use Kubuntu Maverick 64-bit and tried to update today to KDE 4.5.3. A "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" gives me

The following packages will be REMOVED
  kde-window-manager kdebase-bin kdebase-workspace kdebase-workspace-bin kdebase-workspace-dev kdepasswd kdm kinfocenter
  konqueror ksysguard kubuntu-desktop kubuntu-konqueror-shortcuts libplasmaclock4b plasma-dataengines-workspace
  plasma-desktop plasma-netbook plasma-widgets-addons plasma-widgets-workspace rekonq
The following packages have been kept back:
  dolphin kdebase-runtime kfind khelpcenter4 konqueror-nsplugins konsole ksystemlog libkonq5 libkonqsidebarplugin4a
  libkwineffects1a libkworkspace4 libplasmagenericshell4 plasma-scriptengine-javascript plasma-widget-folderview
  systemsettings
The following packages will be upgraded:
  gwenview kamera kdebase-data kdebase-runtime-data kdebase-workspace-data kdebase-workspace-kgreet-plugins
kdegraphics-libs-data kdegraphics-strigi-plugins klipper kmag kmousetool krosspython ksnapshot ksysguardd libkdcraw8
  libkdecorations4 libkephal4 libkexiv2-8 libkipi7 libkonq5-templates libkscreensaver5 libksgrd4 libksignalplotter4
  liblsofui4 libokularcore1 libplasma-geolocation-interface4 libprocesscore4a libprocessui4a libsolidcontrol4a
  libsolidcontrolifaces4 libtaskmanager4a okular okular-extra-backends plasma-scriptengine-python python-kde4
  system-config-printer-kde

which is not right, since it asks to remove (for example) "plasma-desktop".

It seems that some packages are kept at previous 4.5.2 version since "sudo apt-get install kde-window-manager" gives:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
 kde-window-manager : Depends: libkio5 (>= 4:4.5.3) but 4:4.5.2a-0ubuntu1~ppa2 is to be installed
Depends: libkwineffects1a (= 4:4.5.3-0ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa1) but 4:4.5.2-0ubuntu1~ppa1 is to be installed
Depends: libkworkspace4 (= 4:4.5.3-0ubuntu1~maverick1~ppa1) but 4:4.5.2-0ubuntu1~ppa1 is to be installed
Depends: libplasma3 (>= 4:4.5.3) but 4:4.5.2a-0ubuntu1~ppa2 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Thanks for your time.

My advice: do not proceed with the upgrade! I did and now KDE/KDM do not start. This is a major (but so far untriaged) problem. https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/+bug/670788 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=256025. Please wait for the affected packages to be fixed i.e. upgrade only when you don't get the message about some packages having to be removed.
