Bug Description

Running kubuntu 12.04 with backports enabled. After updating from kde 4.10.1 to 4.10.2 I get the following error on login:

unable to create io-slave, error loading kde-desktop

Anything depending on io-slave, eg dolphin refuses to run. As a result, the desktop is pretty much non-functional although it does load. Tried creating a new account and got the same error.

Restored from backup and reran the update to kde 4.10.2 from muon-update while logged into a blackbox session and got the same result. Restored from a backup again and ran the update a third time from a terminal in a blackbox session with kde not running and no kde applications loaded using apt-get update, apt-get dist-upgrade and the update went through without error. Logged into kde 4.10.2 after the update and everything now seems fine - no more io-slave error. Apparently, there was a problem with doing this update with kde running or with certain kde libs loaded. Updating from a terminal with kde not running and no kde applications running fixed the problem.

Alexis, that doesn't appear to be the same problem. In my case, X loaded and, in fact, kde loaded as well. It's just that nothing requiring io-slave would work which covers a good deal of the kde desktop. The more I think about it, I may just have updated from a mirror that was not completely in sync with the new kde packages which left kde in an inconsistent state. The final update that worked was two days after my initial try and it may be the case that the mirror I used had corrected this problem over those two days.
