Bug Description

setting a global status message as "online" and then manually changing the status to "away" or "idle" makes the status message to disappear in my local application (but my contacts are still able to read the message). changing again the status to "online" makes the status message to disappear also from my contact's application.

Works for me on google talk/jabber.
Please provide any information vital to reproduce this issue, most importantly the type of IM network.

sorry for being so generic.
the protocol that causes this problem is MSN,
"local" application is kopete version 0.50.1 & KDE 4.0.2

I am unsure what your actual problem ist Fabio but let me try:
1. You are setting a status message in the main window at the bottom.
2. You change change your status from online to away.
3. The status message you set before goes away.

Is that correct?
If so I can reproduce this here and I think it is intended behaviour.

Thank you Lydia for your answer, that was more or less the problem I was reporting.
I don't know if it is the intended behaviour, but to me it seems very uncomfortable to set the message every time I change my status.
But, if it is the intended behaviour, then comes the second part of the problem.
The status message disappear at the first status change, but only in the local application (i.e. it is still "shouted" to my contacts, and visible to them), and it need a second status change to make it "really" disappear. This happens with different "remote" applications (for example msn messenger on windows, and adium on mac) and different protocols (msn and jabber) so it makes me believe that this problem is in kopete.
I hope to have been clearer, it is a complicated problem to explain :)

I'd like kopete to respect/keep the status message I set, even with auto away. Presently there's only 3 options (or at least that's what I see):
1) Use a static away message
2) Use "last status message" (almost as static as 1)
3) Don't use auto away, set status manually or ignore the status.

What I'd like is to have the auto away to have a third behaviour:
Change status to "away", but keep the current status message. And when the "auto-back" is checked (the "become avail..." check box) the status message is kept, only the status returnes to "online" (or maybe better yet to the previous status before the auto away).

example scenario where this is desired: status is "I'm home", now I'm online, then I go to the kitchen to make some coffee, etc. Time passes, auto away kicks in. I'm still home so my status message is still what I want, but as I'm not at the computer I want to have 'away' status untill I return to the computer, when it should turn to 'online' automagically.

Also, what I'd like is the "good old way" to change status _and_ the staus message at the same time directly via the status menu (but perhaps that's another whish-bug)

A "mockup" of how the config could look

hmm... a quick look at the .ui file in qt designed revealed that it apparently is possible to easily make that entire option checkable. A text change + check box and it looks sort of what I'm thinkning of (ui-wise). I have no idea how much coding it'd be behind the scenes (I have no familiarity with the kopete code) to actually make it work though.

This bug is getting worser and worser in kopete-kde4!!! There's not a clear and safe way to set a status message, like "I'm happy", that stays there whichever status I select after.
Every IM client has this possibility and I don't understand why Kopete is programmed to behave in this odd way! I think that someone should mark this at least as whishlist!

Bump still not satisfactory in 4.3.0.

Perhaps I wasn't clear on the whish/bug, so let me rephrase:
There's still no way to have auto-away _just_ change the _status_ from Online -> Away. (without clobbering current status message)

I've just given Kopete another chance, but having to reset my status message every time I am automatically made "away" may just drive me mad and drive me back to Pidgin again :-p

Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained.

Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
