I cannot reproduce this bug anymore.
I tried with the latest versions from their github repository because I am not sure if I have overwritten the file which produced the bug with a different version. No error message.

Is there any setting in Kicad I could try to reset which could have changed through my tests?

@Martin, the last error message indicates youbare telling it to open it as an eeschema file, while it is an eagle file. You need to use the appropiate menu entry.

Ok, then forget the last screenshot.
As I cannot reproduce this behaviour this bug can be closed if there are no more ideas.
