Bug Description

KiCAD v5.1.2 crashes when after installing the very first action is to try to open an existing project and there is no support for OpenGL.

When EEschema opens, it shows a dialog saying the OpenGL could not be used and tries to go to software rendering, however the application crashes and has to be terminated.

If however PCBNew is open first, a dialog comes that tries to turn the OpenGL mode on, if this is not accepted, the application crashes, if OpenGL mode is accepted, on opening PCBNew detects that there is no support for OpenGL and uses fallback mode and continues to work. If EEScheme is then opened, it fails to render the schematic window (Toolbars seem fine), trying to select fallback mode, crashes KiCAD.

The workaround I found to make it work is to create first a new Project, it will go to fallback mode in both PCBNew and EEschema close KiCAD and then open the existing Project, then everything works as expected (so far, not tested a lot yet).

A more detailed explanation was posted on the KiCAD forums:

I tried to reproduce this by installing a clean copy of 5.1.2 on a VM running Windows 7 x64 with OpenGl support turned off. I can't reproduce any of the hang/crash scenarios reported here. I get the "falling back to software rendering" dialog, and then everything seems to work fine.

@der.ule -- does this happen no matter what project you open at first?
