Bug Description

I have come across a number of devices that suggest a half-oval pad where the other end is rectangular. I imagine this would not be difficult to add.

For example, I'm looking at the footprint at https://www.intel.com/content/dam/www/programmable/us/en/pdfs/literature/ds/ep5358xui_03541.pdf (page 25).

Aaron, you can compose your own pad shapes with KiCad 5.0, which has a tool for this purpose. Select one of `Custom` as a pad shape then open third tab in pad properties.

A bit off topic: Yes some manufactuers suggest such a pad shape. The industry standard (IPC) however suggests the use of pads that are symetrical. In 7351-B and earlier oblong pads (In kicad called oval) are suggested. The future 7351-C suggests to move to rounded rectangle pads.

Regarding the use of custom pads: Well they do not quite work with thermals at this point in time.

With a bit of tinkering this could be solved by a generalized version of the current chamfered pad. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1824614
