Bug Description

I used rc3 builds before several times without issue. I wanted to upgrade to the official stable 5 just released.

After a full installation (I deleted the content of the rc3 directory), when starting pcbnew or the footprint editor, I get a Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Error :
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an ususual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information [OK]

Once OK is hit the project window is dimmed and I finally get a windows error to exit.

eeschema, the symbol editor or gerbview are working fine.

I cannot explain this. Are you sure you didn't interrupt the installer?

Unfortunately I didn't interrupt it. I even re-installed twice to be sure. I also tried to disable my antivirus, rebooted, etc. with no luck.

As I totally deleted the previous rc3 installation (dated around 15 days ago) to install this stable version, today I have v5 projects with PCB files I can't open :-( I'm kind of stuck.

I can try to rebuild the rc3 and you can try to install that on top. I assume you need the 32 bit build as it looks like you are on a 32 bit windows.

Try the build artifact from https://jenkins.simonrichter.eu:8443/job/windows-kicad-msys2-patch/63/, just install it on top of the 5.0.0 release.

Thanks for your time.

Your build artifact works ! I can run pcbnew and the footprint editor with no problem.

I had the same problem: downloaded and installed kicad-5.0.0-i686.exe on Windows 7 SP1 (32 bits)
Trying to run pcbnew, it throws the error message described in this bug report.
Then I installed the patched version and now it works OK.

@Carloszelayeta From what I understand, the "patched version" is not the same as the stable v5. It's only a rebuild of the rc3. There may be differences in code between that version and the official v5 release.

Good news. It seems that the modified build process (https://github.com/KiCad/kicad-winbuilder/commit/6b30306a4d8fec760a1f36ae4f23552716ce9087) fixed this bug. The new installer available on the download page (size = 1 064 130 128 bytes) works for me.
