I cannot reproduce this in latest Windows Nightly (2018-01-18 revision ef13b97ff, full version info below), the nets are visible in all three canvases when adequately zoomed in. I notice my version is slightly newer than the one reported above.

That is the 32 bit version, so maybe different behaviour.
The bug was brought up on the KiCad forum by another user, so I had a look.

I also see that Version: (2018-01-07 revision 445fc0000) on a different PC (and graphics card) does display correctly

This bug seems to be triggered when a project was saved with the copper layers turned off. Restore the project and then make F.Cu visible - the net names are missing.
Save with the copper layer visible and on restore, the nets name is immediately shown

David, thank you for the hint about the copper layers visibility - it made the debugging a piece of cake.

Yes I could also reproduce this under those conditions, good catch David. The next nightly should confirm.

I do not think we will have another 4.x release to fix it, we are too close to v5 release.

I would only classify this one as "Low" anyway. No data loss and an easy work round with F9-F11
