PCBnew opens blank in background when working in Footprint Editor [OSX]

When working in Footprint Editor, PCBnew always opens a blank window in the background without me opening it. It then won't allow me to close it, even after closing the footprint editor. Screenshots attached. This has occurred on OSX 10.11 as well and earlier versions of KiCad, I just finally got around to filing the bug (haven't been super active in KiCad until now)

Steps to reproduce:
  1. new project
  2. Open footprint editor
  3. PCBnew opens blank in the background

Also occurs on 2016-12-18 nightly build.

this only occurs when pcbnew (and as such footprint editor) is in openGL mode, so is likely to do with the init of the opengl canvas

resolved in 88eb648cbb5d5552fef4e9ffd5f57b2f61cfa8ff unlikely to be backported to stable though
