Bug Description

Hi,

Build 6546.

Start KiCad
PCB Footprint Editor -> Open Footprint Viewer
Select a library in viewer and a footprint inside it.
Click on "Show footprint in 3D viewer" icon

Case A

3D Viewer opens and works as expected, use the Library browser, it works OK too.
Close 3D Viewer.
Library browser still works OK.

Case B

3D Viewer opens and works as expected. DO NOT USE LIBRARY BROWSER.
Close 3D Viewer.
As soon as mouse pointer enters the footprint panel, it blanks and never shows another footprint.

All this is on Windows. OpenGL canvas selected.

I cannot duplicate this bug on either 64-bit or 32-bit windows builds. Can anyone else duplicate it? One issue I did run into was when the footprint viewer is launched from the footprint select dialog, the 3D viewer opened behind the footprint viewer and cannot be raised in front of it which is annoying. I'm using win pro 7 with intel graphics chip and drivers. Perhaps your problem is specific to your graphics chip and/or drivers.

You didn't specify which windows version you are using. Please paste the KiCad version information string into you bug reports. This contains your operating system information.

Sometimes it happens to me (W7 32 bits), but I cannot duplicate it easily.
Looks like some OpenGL initialization is lost.

Just switch to legacy canvas and then to OpenGL (GAL) canvas) ( F9 then F11) is enough to reinitialize the viewer.

Hi Wayne,

It's on Windows XP 32bit. I have managed to see this behavior all the
times I have tested it.

Now I'm at home, in a Windows 7 x64 machine I can't duplicate either.

Iñigo.

Inigo, any chance you can test whether the bug is still present?

Hello,

I'm completely new to KiCad and I'm not sure wether this is the same problem I detect. I open the library browser for the footprint. I select one e.g. "battery_holders" and I can see the names of the footprints. I select an other one e.g. "Connectors" and see there the footprints. When I change back to "Batter_Holders" I only get one blank window. This happen to any there. The first click is successful and after change to an other and coming back the result is a blank window. When I wish to see them again I have to close KiCad completely and start again.
I found out that this happen only to this libraries which are pointed to the github. When I make this to a footprint lib which is local on my computer I do not have this problem.

My system is macos and the kicad version is the nightly build from 2nd of march.
