the only problem i see with doing this is currently its quite convenient if you don't know that 8mil is 0.2032mm as you might be designing to mil specs with your chip placement being mm

It is pretty nice and convient to have both units available at the same view, this because mil is so hardly bound to electronics stuff and I prefer metric.

I don't want to get rid of the alternate units. My imperial brain
doesn't always convert to metric very well so when I have to work in
metric creating footprints, it's nice to have the imperial units handy
for reference purposes. I wouldn't be opposed to making this optional
but please keep in mind one of the goals of the KiCad project is to
support the largest group of users possible. Users with small displays
are not our target user group so making changes to support small
displays would be very low on our priority list.

It will be good if it will be optional. For my metric brain my eyes dazzled, very much numbers on screen.
Maybe show in tooltip converted units

I also use them. I'm OK with a preference setting, but I wouldn't be a fan of moving them to just tooltips.

I would veto moving them to tooltips. I do not want to have to move the
cursor out of the drawing area to see the alternate units and then back
to the drawing area. Unless you have some other cleaver way to resolve
this, an option is the only option.
