Bug Description

Hello!
I've just installed Kicad v4.0.0 rc1 from js-reynaud repository and everything was working smoothly until I ran Cvpcb:
the same error I've been getting every once in a while, even on previous versions:

"Errors were encountered loading footprints
IO_ERROR: http GET command failed
Cannot get/download Zip archive: 'https://codeload.github.com/KiCad/Resistors_ThroughHole.pretty/zip/master'
for library path: 'https://github.com/KiCad/Resistors_ThroughHole.pretty'.
Reason: 'Host not found (authoritative)'
from /build/kicad-gYX1iP/kicad-4.0.0/kicad/pcbnew/github/github_plugin.cpp : remote_get_zip() : line 584"

Sometimes this error window gets bigger than the screen because it shows errors for many libaries. Sometimes it only shows error for a single library.

I understand that kicad is loading footprint libraries from github, but since I have a perfectly working internet connection, what is the cause of the failing?
Is it a proxy problem like I've read somewhere on the internet?
Is it a problem on the github servers?

There must be a simple fix, but I am seeing this problem for a long time.
I know people who download all libraries so they won't get bothered with this problem again.

I'd like to keep using it from githug. What can I do to fix it?

Thank you.

I am experiencing the same problems running 4.0.0-rc-stable on Windows 7 x64. I have included a screenshot of the error message.

And in the finest traditions of bug solving everywhere, 10 minutes after commenting on this ticket I found the solution.

These listed packages are Deprecated and no longer exist. Scroll to the right of the package information dialog and you can see they can be safely removed.

This installation was relatively recent, so I'm not sure if they still exist in the new builds and need to be removed?

Unfortunately part of the growing pains for the github repo libraries. This was the last big move before the release. I do agree that the errors are less than helpful. Maybe in the future the error message can be adapted if it sees "deprecated" in the description or something?

I would also like to add that I personally consider this a bug since I have seen /so many people/ ask about what this error means/what happened.

Will the github repos be set as default in stable release (if they will, why)?

It's very confusing especially when error contain path to C:/Jenkins which is probably just on build server. I think that such error never should be in the release version. If it is just warning it should be hidden somewhere in the log. I installed KiCad today and I already seen much more error dialogs than others screens.

But delete c:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\kicad\ is best solution now.

My solution was to delete the libraries and use the Append with Wizard function in the Footprint Libraries window.
I think it would be great if the popup windows recommended this action instead of listing the errors.

There is a workaround available: https://acassis.wordpress.com/2015/09/01/fixing-kicad-library-not-found-issue/

Certainly it would be a good idea to update the list from time to time and distribute releases with a working footprint list in the future (when the structure has stabilized).

The above mentioned workarounds don't work for me. I am working an a Win 7 x86 system with KiCAD 4.0.1-stable.

If I connect to a wifi (without a proxy), I can see the footprint libraries from github within Cvpcb wihtout a problem. If using my companies LAN (with proxy) I can not access the libraries on github using Cvpcb. Surfing the web or downloading the libraries from github manualy is working fine. See the attached error message when trying to add the github libraries using the wizard.

To me it looks like KiCAD is not using the proxy.

It looks like this was incorrectly marked as a duplicate with https://bugs.launchpad.net/kicad/+bug/1583178.

The original reported bug is not related to a proxy servers.

The last comment is related to the proxy.

the original bug is based on host not found, Which is not a bug in kicad, Its a bug in the users dns or similar systems, It then segued into libraries not found in the comments, which to a degree is also not really a bug as its to do with old configuration files and the problem is described and hte library list clearly states the issue. The Last comment then segues into proxy which could exaplain the initial issue, and if it doesn't then the issue will be closed as not being a bug. kicad can't compensate for incorrect network settings or github being down
