you cant see the rainbow wheel in the screen capture video, but it is happening. Also, not sure if its clear, but there is a huge lag from the time you click zoom to the time the screen zooms.

What version of KiCad are you using? What mac are you using?

Also read the section about retina displays here:
http://www.kicad-pcb.org/display/DEV/Known+System+Related+Issues

Also, are you in GAL or the default canvas?

Ok, you are using the legacy canvas. Don't ever expect that to be improved. The GAL (OpenGL) should become the new.

Perhaps the default should be changed to GAL, and the legacy called legacy? If "Legacy" is being deprecated in the next stable release GAL should be default so all the testing/ bug reporting is focused there.

No, GAL won't be complete upon the next release, and has to be kept default. You should use the workaround described in the link I posted or simply switch to GAL. It is not hard. The last part is by any means my opinion, and not an official statement aligned with the KiCad developers.

OK. I did the "open in low resolution mode" fix and it is working better. Thanks for the help. There are still a lot of things in the default canvas that are not implemented in the GAL version that I really need, like the track clearances, netnames on the tracks, etc.

Hence we should keep the legacy canvas default.

Seems so. Is there any way for the Mac OS X installer to set the low resolution flag if it detects a retina mac? Or maybe just default to that low resolution mode since virtually all MACs are retina since 2012ish

Same problems here on an 5K iMac. Switching to low resolution mode helps, but now everything looks awful :(
