Bug Description

After installing the mozilla-acroread package (and all its dependencies), the Acrobat reader plugin for mozilla/firefox does not work.

If I type "about:plugins" in the URL bar, I can see that the acrobat plugin is not loaded, although there're other plugins loaded correctly (for example, the Macromedia Flash plugin installed via flashplugin-nonfree package).

The Java plugin (installed via j2re1.4-mozilla-plugin package) works too.

I have the same problem.

Here's the error message that occurs:

$ firefox
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so [/usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so: undefined symbol: XtCalloc]

Well, it now works for me. I don't know if it was my latest update or my switch to Kubuntu and uninstallation of lots of Gnome stuff.

Now works for me too... I don't know why :/

I think this bug can be closed now, and reopen if the problem appears again.

For me it doesn't work since my dist-upgrade to dapper. My system is up to date and i also reinstalled arcoread-plugins, mozilla-acroread and acroread.
With "about:plugins" acroread plugin is listed without mistake.
Firefox when started from the terminal doesn't give any error messages.

I installed dapper flight 6 (+ most recent updates + multiverse acroread/mozilla-acroread/acroread-plugins) and get the same error message when starting firefox from the command line:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browse r/intellinux/nppdf.so [/usr/lib/Adobe/Acrobat7.0/Browser/intellinux/nppdf.so: un defined symbol: XtCalloc]

"about:plugins" does not list the plugin.

My work around is that I don't use mozilla-acroread anymore. I switched to using mozplugger. Dapper has an older mozplugger so I had to get the version from http://dagobah.ucc.asn.au/mozplugger

Also with mozplugger you need to fix a config file so that embedded PDFs with acroread will work.

Here's how I got embedded PDFs with Acrobat Reader (acroread) working in Firefox:

I want to state this bug still exists in Dapper Beta with Firefox 1.5.0.1. My workaround was an ugly one; I copied the nppdf.so file from Adobe's 7.0.5 release over the one provided by mozilla-acroread.

This bug's status is "fix released", but I can only assume it was in an earlier version which possibly didn't use Firefox 1.5.
