Bug Description

Binary package hint: kmail

If the wrong password is used when connecting to an SMTP sever, kmail displays a misleading error message.

The transport is configured with Encryption=None and Authentication Method=PLAIN. Ethereal shows the transaction as follows (trimmed and munged):

250-PIPELINING
250-8BITMIME
250-SIZE 15728640
250 AUTH LOGIN PLAIN
AUTH PLAIN xxxx
535 authentication failed (#5.7.1)

Kmail then displays the message:

Sending failed:
Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN.
Choose a different authentication method.
The server responded: "authentication failed (#5.7.1)"
The message will stay in the 'outbox' folder until you either fix the problem (e.g. a broken address) or remove the message from the 'outbox' folder.
The following transport protocol was used:

The problem is not that the server doesn't support PLAIN. Just entering the correct password resolves the problem.

Running Etch on 2.6.18-5-686 kernel, Qt: 3.3.7, KDE: 3.5.5, KMail: 1.9.5 and I get the same error message. Same settings in Icedove (Thunderbird) and I can send mail no problems!

Below is the kmail error message:

Sending failed:
Your SMTP server does not support PLAIN. Choose a different authentication method. The server responded: "5.7.1 Credentials Rejected u9sm6661283muf"

Glad to give any more info...

Cheers

Hello,

Thanks for reporting this feature request! Unfortunately, at this time Kubuntu does not have the developer manpower needed to implement and maintain many features at the Kubuntu level. But don't worry! This issue is being tracked by the KDE developers at: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122145
Once implemented in KDE, it will be included in Kubuntu once the KDE version the feature is implemented in reaches Kubuntu.

Thanks!
