Bug Description

Binary package hint: kde

This worked with Breezy but didn't work with Dapper and so far it doesn't work with Edgy.

Description:
When using KDE, you're able to choose, when restarting, which grub item (or which OS) to boot into after the system restarts.
After you set KDE up to be able to do this, you pick the item you want to boot into when you restart and grub would still boot the default item, not the one you chose.

Steps to reproduce:
1. In Kubuntu, open kcontrol (or system settings) and go to "Login Manager".
2. Click on "Administrator Mode" and type in your root password.
3. Click on the "Shutdown" tab and change the "Boot Manager" to "Grub".
4. Restart X (or just reboot).
5. Once the system loads, go to the K Menu.
6. Click on "log out" and now the "end session" window opens.
7. You'll notice a small arrow now on the "Restart Computer" button. Give it a long click (don't let go of the left mouse button until a menu opens)
8. Pick anything out of the menu, except for what kubuntu boots into by default.
9. Watch as your system reboots. It will still boot to the default Grub item as stated by your '/boot/grub/menu.lst'.

Desired action:
It should have booted into the OS I chose.

Actual action:
It boots into the default option as if I never told it what to boot into.

It was reported fixed by Andreas Simon at comment 7 in bug 29684. Is it still a problem for you in edgy?

as I said, this bug remains.
I just tested it again on edgy (final) and I see nothing has changed for me since I originally reported this bug.

It does not work with Ubuntu's default grub configuration. It's important to have "default saved" in /boot/grub/menu.lst . See comment 14 in the linked upstream bug for explanation.

I changed the menu.lst file accordingly and ran into issues.

1. my choice for next boot went unnoticed and it was only after the SECOND time I booted that grub chose the correct option.
2. grub kept on trying to boot the same operating system instead of the default at the 3rd, 4th, 5th... boot attempt. it didn't go back to the default.

My reason for originally posting this bug was that this feature worked perfectly in breezy. Why would I need to tinker with files to make it work now?
