Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

If I launch Konqueror and select Network Folders, one of the options I'm given is "Samba Shares".

It's difficult to imagine a user who has just installed Kubuntu onto their Windows box being able to make the mental leap from "Samba Shares" to "Other Windows boxes on my network".

A better name would be "Windows Shares (using Samba)" (you can cut out the last two words if needed; credit can always be given on the following page, along with an examplanation that SMB isn't just a Windows protocol on the remote off-chance that anyone cares).

Very true, excellent point here. I will wishlist this and hope this becomes a spec soon, maybe for edgy+1?

It is true. Tell a new user he can access his/her Windows shares via Network Folders, they will be confused. Even if they figure out how to get to Network folders, when they see Samba Shares, they will be confused even further.

I agree on this idea.
Best thing is probably to get that done upstream instead of ubuntu only.
The desktop file is in kdebase and not kdenetwork

I followed the discussion on the kubuntu-devel irc channel and my opinion is that the most logical description is "network shares (SMB)" because if you don't have any Windows PC in your network it makes no sense that there are windows shares.
Network shares using the NFS protocol should be shown as "Network Shares (NFS)".

Volker Löchte : I totally agree, since smb is widely used in the linux world too.
Your proposal looks the most logic, indeed

In remote:/ there is an entry titled "Samba Shares"

A new user would have no idea what this means, and would not know to look there for windows shares. This should be renamed to something that is more self explanatory.

Originally reported here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/50264
There are some ideas to rename it to "Network Shares (SMB)" or "Windows Shares (using Samba)".

This hasn't changed in KDE 4. The entry in remote:/ (accessible via Network in dolphin's sidebar) still says "Samba Shares".

This could be still valid in KDE4.

Hello there,

Kubuntu currently does not have the manpower necessary to implement this feature as a distribution, so we are closing this report. Worry not, though, because your wish item is still being tracked by KDE at http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=141257 . Once KDE implements this feature, we will include it in the Kubuntu release which contains the KDE version the feature was implemented in.

Thanks for understanding, and have a nice day.

Rename 'Samba Shares' to 'Windows Shares (SMB)'

This simply renames 'Samba Shares' to 'Windows Shares (SMB)'
I am open to suggestions for other names.

patch against kde-runtime/kioslave/smb/smb-network.desktop
Not sure how to commit this..

My vote is on "Network Shares (SMB/CIFS)".

- Network shares will be understandable for people coming from a Windows environment, while specifying the protocols won't piss off those to whom network sharing is solely nfs.
