Tested in both stable and dev.

I found with the DEV branch, sometimes the region window would appear, but then when press enter, then record, it records the whole screen anyway, not just the region you selected.

For me it consistently doesn't work. If I click the region button, the entire window gets grayed out so nothing is selectable/clickable and I eventually have to close it from the icon on the task bar.

I'm having the same problem (also Mint 13 Mate, 64 bit). I'm hoping it's some kind of missing dependency that someone figures out or something.

Thanks for your report. Can you please try the latest unstable release and run it with --debug option and attach the output here? This way I'll get some more debug information.

I have the same problem as Tom Preuss even on Xubuntu 12.10 with version 1.0.6-0ubuntu1. There doesn't seem to be a newer version and Kazam is pretty unusable because I can just record the entire desktop.

This is a problem with non-compositing window managers. In version 1.3.5 you are able to select the area or recording, but the selection window isn't transparent.

I am currently looking for a solution for this.

This leads to a workaround (close to a fix) in Mint with Mate. Go to Desktop Settings (which, for me, is in System->Preferences, but not if you use the default menus), then click "Windows," then check "Use compositing." This fixes Kazam's "Record Region" issue, fixes the transparency issue in the "Recording will begin in" display, and I am wondering if it'll fix issues in other programs, too.

I seem to recall having an issue with CairoDock transparency that I think would be fixed with this option. Wow, great discovery, haha.

Andrew, thanks for the information. I don't use Mint myself and I'll add this to the README file.

After more thorough investigation, I decided to close this. Most of the desktop environments have compositing window managers, sometimes compositing needs enabling, but it is there.
