Uploading a Word file shows wrong mimetype

Bug #341131 reported by Paul Everitt on 2009-03-11
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone

Bug Description

When viewing an uploaded Word file using IE, it shows:

  File type: application/octet-stream

Uploading using FF on Windows shows:

  File type: application/msword

KARL2 says:

  File type: Word

I believe we had some KARL3 code in there that tried to infer the correct type from mimetype *and* file extensions. If not, we need it.

Karl now displays correct mimetype and icon of uploaded files in all views.

However IE sends up application/octet-stream for these files. This means if the files are uploaded by IE, they will have the wrong mimetype.

Unless we find a way to force IE to send up the correct mimetype, we need to consider a server-side heuristics for doing the same.

Please check on your IE version and OS, if the bug is active on that specific version.
