Bug Description

Hi,

When deploying offline the juju vsphere provider attempts to download images using simple streams.

This presents a problem when deploying offline without a repository.

It would be nice to have a way of supplying the images to juju without the need of a repository.

Cheers
Peter

To clarify, you are talking about image metadata?
There's already a way to do use off line simplestreams metadata using one of two bootstrap args:
--metadata-source (the image metadata is located in a local directory)
--image-metadata-url (the image metadata is located at the specified url endpoint)

Or are you talking about the vmdk file, eg
https://cloud-images.ubuntu.com/releases/xenial/release/ubuntu-16.04-server-cloudimg-amd64-disk1.vmdk

Hey @wallworld,

Apologies the title is a bit confusing here, we would like the ability to attach a vmdk file. If there's a way to do this with simplestreams then great. But if possible without the use of a server hosting the simplestreams file/vmdk.

Cheers

Thanks for clarifying :-)

It's likely we won't get to this for this 2.8 release cycle.
We can look to get this on the roadmap for next cycle, possibly in a point release.

How important is this for your deployments?

Hi, it is not sure yet if we follow with vsphere or MAAS, so I cannot precise the urgency of this issue. I will have to update you on the following weeks.

The idea here is to have a constraint or a model-config where I can point an image name & path within vsphere instead of resorting on Juju to fetch it online.

Or if you can work with local simplestreams, but I had one setup and I did not find any OVA images.

A couple of clarifications to be sure we have a common understanding.

simple streams is just image metadata, not the actual images.
simple streams metadata is stored at streams.canonical.com
cloud images are stored at cloud-images.ubuntu.com

The image to use can't be a simple model config, as there are separate images for each series, and in future arch. It may be that there's a config that points to a folder containing all the images.

There hasn't been much discussion on this since March. Going to go ahead and mark as Wishlist. This could use a proper spec document.
