Bug Description
Using the default autoinstaller, Debian gets installed with local -a returning only POSIX and C; en_US.UTF-8 should be built as well, and preferably the default locale. (Can be worked around at the user level by running dpkg-reconfigure locales.)

Something in the Ubuntu installer creates an /etc/default/locale that says LANG="en_US.UTF-8". The autoinstaller does not.
