Bug Description

The new flash plugin in Intrepid has several advantages, the most important being that it's now a native amd64 program on amd64 Ubuntu.

The package builds without source modifications, I'm attaching some amd64 and i386 packages for people to try.

Please test them and report how they work. I could only test the amd64 version, they work fine for me.

Last time we tried a flashplugin-nonfree backport it was a disaster. This needs to be tested on amd64 and i386 by users of Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu before I'll accept it.

The Hardy backport was attempting to upgrade from flash 9 to 10 beta. This Intrepid backport would be a transition from the 32-bit to 64-bit alpha version of flash 10 for 64-bit systems. The benefit is that nspluginwrapper is no longer needed, which would eliminate the related bugs. While I think the risk of regressions is a lot lower than the Hardy backport situation, I agree that testing still needs to be done.

As for flashplugin-nonfree 10.0.15.3ubuntu1 on Ubuntu Jaunty, I have not experienced any problems so far, which is in great contrast to the previous nspluginwrapper situation.

Scott, again the status was put to "Confirmed" as per https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports

Is there a different documentation elsewhere, or should just this wiki page be updated?

The wiki is correct, but the backporter the approves the change my impose
additional requirement on a case by case basis. Flash is one case known to
be sensitive to different environments.

Wasn't that the purpose of TRIAGED (=to be set when you consider enough testing has been done)?
I wonder if anyone would look at backports bugs marked Incomplete when testing packages for backports.

In theory yes, but in practice it's not much use because Triaged is a
restricted status that most people can't set. Change it back to New if you
prefer.

Woops, apologies for the wrong bug tag. I'm using intrepid 64-bit, but I suppose it shouldn't be hard to test it on intrepid 32-bit in a virtual machine :)
I'll do that, unless someone is actually using it as we speak.

Please note that the current package is 10.0.21.1 (10.0 d21), not 10.0.15.3. Should effect both Jaunty and the Intrepid backport.

Noel, the package config file says:

if [ "$(uname -m)" = "x86_64" ]; then
    SUM="67aa4a0b205584bc5a841eb948cafab7f888ec79"
    FILE="libflashplayer-10.0.d21.1.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz"

So I'm not sure where the problem is.

As for the name of the package, it's a different story, but possibly the i386 version and the amd64 are different.

- it works for Firefox in a Gnome environment on Intrepid amd64

If nobody has Kubuntu results, I'll install kubuntu-desktop and maybe xubuntu-desktop later and report how it works.

I hadn't looked inside the package. That's just confusing to have the package reflect one product version and the guts another.

Quite possible. :-)

Works with Firefox in a KDE desktop on Intrepid amd64.

As for the tests in Gnome, it fixes the bug with Intrepid's current package where a lot of video don't show and you have to reload (F5) the page many (sometimes 10 times or more) in order for the video frame to show instead of a gray square). I haven't seen this bug anymore since I've been using the backported packages.

Didn't it purge the old flash package when you installed it?

No, it didn't. I'm thinking that may be because it was a generated file
instead of an installed file.

OK, that's normal, sorry :)
So that's done, what's left to check?

BTW, the 64 bit version seems a lot more stable. I ran it for about 4
hours straight last night without a single crash or need to reload.
Usually I have at least 1 crash and reload a night with the 32 bit
version wrapped. Great job!

I downloaded Xubuntu Intrepid i386 Live CD and ran it in a virtual machine yesterday (kvm) and installed the backported flash plugin (I didn't apply updates, and didn't install RealPlayer) in a Live session. I can confirm Firefox crashes when I try to read any flash video on Youtube.

The 64-bit version (on amd64 xubuntu) works well though, I was testing
it for 4-5 days so far, no crash.
That's weird, since they use a different binary, isn't it?

Jaunty is out now, and there's less incentive for a backport (we'd have a hard time finding enough testers now, not even fixing the Xubuntu bug). Feel free to reopen if you see the need for it (and can solve the problem on Xubuntu + test all relevant arch).
