PNG transparency lost after EPS->PDF export

Bug Description

When I export a SVG with PNGs containing transparency
to EPS, Inkscape changes transparency to black (current
CVS) or white (a CVS some days ago). This is probably
because PS/EPS does not support transparency. But I
like to convert the EPS to PDF using "epstopdf" where
it is supported very well.

When using Illustrator for SVG->EPS export and then using
"epstopdf" again the resulting PDF has perfect
transparency.

If the conversion is done explicitly for PS
compatibility issues please provide a checkbox in the
EPS export/save dialog asking for transparency conversion.

I attached an example.

Here's the eps file, it preserves the transparency when opened in Photoshop or ImageReady. However it loses it in Gimp and Scribus won't open it.

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → In Progress
