inkscape crashes when trying to open or preview an inkscape .svg file

Bug Description
Mac OS X 10.7.3
XQuarz 2.6.3
inkscape 0.48
When inkscape saved a file that I had worked on for a couple of hours, it crashed producing an additional backup of the current file.
When I try to open either the saved file or the crash backup, inkscape crashes again. This also occurs when the file is to be shown as preview in the open dialogue.

on Windows 7, Inkscape 0.48.3.1, the file opens correctly, as far as I can tell.
however, I get the following error messages in the console output
C:\Program Files\Inkscape> inkscape
