Crash not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.2 and Inkscape 0.48+devel r10920 on
- Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard (32bit), 4GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
- OS X 10.7.2 Lion (64bit), 8GB RAM, 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Saving the opened PDF file as 'Inkscape SVG' results in document with the size of ~83.3 MB.

- crash reproduced on Windows 7 (32 bit), Inkscape 0.48.2 with 4GB. crash occurred at a reported memory usage of 2 GB, exit message was :
** (inkscape.exe:1028): WARNING **: GC Warning: Out of Memory! Returning NIL!

- crash not reproduced on Windows XP, Inkscape rev 10915. In this case the total reported memory usage was about 1.5GB.

Reproduced on WIndows XP, Inkscape 0.48.2.
Not reproduced with trunk revision 10923.

Note that the similar (duplicate?) issue in Bug #367779 "Out of memory crash while importing large pdf" (with a PDF file 1.6Mio bigger than the one in this report) also crashes with r10923.

Re comment 3: I would consider bug 920519 and bug 367779 to be duplicates.
As crashing seems to be size linked, I'd consider this bug to be about memory consumption reduction.
However, one strange thing about this bug on vista 64 bit (4GB ram) with trunk r12126 is that the PDF does not crash the system with file > open, but crashes because of too few memory with File > import.
