Bug Description

Hi.

Using latest version: Inkscape 0.48+devel r10115

Using this version on twodifferent computers. One of them is running XP sp2. On that computer, moving objects in Inkscape seems to work.
On the other machine that runs Windows 7, the arrow keys that should move any object just doesn't work. When I shifted back to version r10146, moving object did work again.

Both computers is running norwegian version of xp/7.

Could you please verify the revision number? The latest development build for WIndows is r10194 [1]. From the description it seems as a known regression as described in comment #10 of bug #170293 [2] - but that can only occur with revisions >= 10177.

I add this comment because I beleive it's related.

Whenever I download a brand new built from modevia, I just unpack it over the old version. I now have Inkscape 0.48+devel r10207. OS = XP sp2 32bit.

I just ran into the same issue again. The arrow key didn't move any objects. I tried several type objects.

Then I found a way to solve the problem. I could still move objects with arrow keys IF I held either Alt, or Alt+Shift down (and possible also just the Shift key).
After doing this for a while, the arrow keys was suddenly capable to move an object when only the arrow keys was pressed down.

I'm sorry to say, I haven't found a way to reproduce the issue. My theory is that it happend when using a newer version, but settings stored in windows was stored from an older version.

Also, I didn't try to delete the program settings folder in windows. That might also have solved the problem, But unfortunately I never tested that out.

You don't have to delete the folder itself - for testing, quit all running inkscape instances, rename the file 'preferences.xml' (you can find it by entering '%APPDATA%\Inkscape' (without quotes) into the address bar of the Explorer) and relaunch Inkscape: the file will be recreated with default values. Later you can restore your custom preferences by copying the renamed version over the newly created file (again quit all running Inkscape instances first).

As mentioned earlier, the problem with any keyboard commands which use a value defined in the 'Steps' preferences pane can occur when working with the stable version alongside current development builds. If a step value is changed in the current stable version, the next time a development version is run, the problem might reoccur (because the stable version doesn't store a unit for the step value in the preferences, but the development version does so and fails if there is none).

<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/170293/comments/10> describes 'steps to reproduce', and an easy 'fix' (just open and close the preferences dialog).

Can you test again if this it what happens? Note that only version >= r10177 are affected by this.
