Segfault after enormous memory consumption when exporting to pdf

Bug Description

Version 0.48.1 r9760 (Feb 15 2011) (debian testing)
I try to export attached svg to pdf via this command (inkscape -z -D --file=fruct9-slide1.svg --export-pdf=fruct9-slide1.pdf --export-area-drawing).

Reproduced with Inkscape 0.48+devel r10184 on OS X 10.5.8 (i386)

The file has pattern fills with clipped paths in the pattern definition - possibly related issue:
Bug #168014 “Redraw fails with clipped object patterns”

(just opening the file in the GUI produces 2540 times this console warning:)
File display/nr-arena-item.cpp line 323 (?): Assertion item->state & NR_ARENA_ITEM_STATE_BBOX failed

Sort of reproduced in Windows 7 (using GUI instead of CLI) on r10141. I get the same message after opening it and crashes after trying to export to PDF.

For me, the whole OS got stuck for several minutes, but it did finish the PDF export. I have a Thinkpad T520 laptop from 2012.

Win 7 64-bit
Inkscape 0.92pre1_64bit r15016
