Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.0, 0.48.1 and 0.48+devel r10124 on OS X 10.5.8 (i386)
tested with the normal command line app (0.48.1, trunk) and packaged as osxapp (0.48.0, 0.48.1, trunk) - all with LANG="en_US.UTF-8".

- Are the paths in the tooltips for the entries in 'File > Open Recent…' correct?
- Does it also happen with the files listed in the GtkFileChooser dialog ('File > Open…') under 'Places > Recently Used'?

Could this be related to changes in GTK+ 2.24.x (which e.g. moved the file which stores the list of recently used files from '~/.recently-used.xbel' to '~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel')?

@~suv. It seems that this only happens with the Unity desktop manager.

Using the classic Gnome desktop:
* Tooltip paths show correctly in "File->Open Recent"
* Files open correctly from "File->Open Recent" in Inkscape
* Files open correctly from "Places->Recently Used"

Using Unity:
* No tooltips appear in "File->Open Recent" in Inkscape
* Same file opens, regardless of option chosen from "File->Open Recent" in Inkscape
* "Places->Recently Used" has been replaced by the Unity Places app. Files open correctly, however

Marked the affected project unity as "Invalid" as I don't see any relevance for this pure application-related problem in inkscape.

It also happens with Unity-2D. Tested on Ubuntu 11.04 with all the latest updates, unity-2d version 3.8.4.1 and Inkscape 0.48.1

Not sure if this is a bug in unity or a change of code somewhere that needs updating in Inkscape, or both. It's also been reported here https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gitg/+bug/777506 for gitg and seems to be appearing in other programs as well.

This looks an awful lot like it relates to Unity.

@~macslow why are you so sure this is application-related?

Same issue present in Inkscape built with Gtk+/Quartz on Mac OS X and the global menu bar integration (GtkOSXApplication from gtk-mac-integration) -> possibly an upstream issue in Gtk+, not specific to the global menu used in Ubuntu's Unity desktop?
