Pattern nodes are not visible in node editor when assigning new pattern

Bug Description
When in node edit mode, if you select a pattern for the object you are editing and the object had no previous pattern assigned, the nodes for the pattern will not be visible until you go out of the node editing mode and enter it again.

For me, actually (on 0.48) the handles (called nodes above, which is why I didn't find it through searching) don't show up no matter what I do, switching mode, reopening or restarting inkscape.

Reproduced with Inkscape 0.47, 0.48.0 and 0.48+devel r9942 on OS X 10.5.8
