Bug Description

I cannot select Italic and or Bold styles on Times New Roman. I tried a lot of different fonts but I couldn't find any other font where this occurs.

Reproduce:

1). Write a text (it defaults to Bitstream Vera Sans for me)
2). Change font to Times New Roman
3). Click Italic and or Bold button. The text doesn't change.

Workaround:

1). Write a text (it defaults to Bitstream Vera Sans for me)
2). Click Italic and or Bold button. The text changes.
3). Change font to Times New Roman. You see the Italic and or Bold style.

I'm using the build from: inkscapeR9492-1006081319 on Windows XP.
I tried to replace the fonts with the fonts installed with the ttf-mscorefonts-installer package in Ubuntu 10.04 and it also fails.

I removed the file %APPDATA%\Inkscape\preferences.xml and relaunched inkscape. Same issue.

1) text tool -> click and enter text
2) select all (Ctrl+A), select 'Times New Roman' as font (Alt+X t)
3) click 'bold' or 'italic' -> no effect

Does not happen when changing font without explicitly selecting (i.e. highlighting) the text nor when choosing the font 'Times'.

'Times New Roman' can be set to bold or italic whether the text is highlighted or not.
('Times' (dfont) doesn't work at all in 0.47 on OS X, fally back to 'Sans')

@Tav - subscribing you to this report because as far as I can tell it didn't happen in 0.47 and might possibly be related to your new code. Could you take a look at it?

I just had a quick look. The first time I tried, I had the same problem but now I cannot recreate it. My guess is that it may be due to a mismatch between font-family and -inkscape-font-specification in one's preferences file. Hopefully some of these "CSS" problems will get straightened out by Abhishek during this years GSOC.

So I don't forget... I just noticed that -inkscape-font-specification uses a ',' to separate the font-family from attributes like "bold". This is bad! font-family can contain a comma separated list of alternative fonts.

Steps to reproduce in 0.48.0, 0.48.1 and 0.48.2:
1) quit inkscape
2) remove or rename the preferences file
3) start inkscape
4) switch to the text tool ('T')
5) create a regular text object: click once on the canvas and enter a string (e.g. "Times New Roman")
6) select all text content by clicking 3 times (or 'Ctrl+A')
7) switch focus to the font family selector ('Alt+X')
8) type "times n" and select 'Times New Roman' from the drop-down list
9) click on 'Bold' or 'Italic' toggles in the text tool controls bar

Expected result: font styles are applied to the highlighted text
Actual results: font style changes fail

(Note: all four styles are available as separate TTF files in the system fonts folder:
  Times New Roman Bold Italic.ttf
  Times New Roman Bold.ttf
  Times New Roman Italic.ttf
  Times New Roman.ttf)

No longer reproduced with recent trunk (Inkscape 0.48+devel r10627, on Mac OS X 10.5.8 (i396)).
If confirmed by others with current development builds (or nightlies), this report can be closed as 'Fix Committed' and milestoned for 0.49).
