i did more testing.
Probably it depends on the width of the tool.
A value of 50 is working fine but a value of 4 let crash inkscape.

uweshe: great observation, I can reproduce with 4 as well

I will look into this

Changed in inkscape:
assignee: nobody → Diederik van Lierop (mail-diedenrezi)

This should have been fixed as of rev. 9181.

Thanks for tracing this down to a single specific revision, this really speeds things up!

Changed in inkscape:
status: Confirmed → Fix Released

(unrelated to the crash and its cause/fix - anyone else seeing an immense increase of memory consumption when using the spray tool? usual RSIZE [*] with small drawing: ~80 MB, after using the spray tool for a minute or two RSIZE goes up to ~800 MB)

[*] on OS X: RSIZE is the total amount of physical RAM used by this process, as displayed in the 'Activity Monitor' system utility.
