Unable to select medium-weight fonts - forced to select bold weight instead

I have a font that comes with several weights - Light, Medium, Bold and Black.

If I try to select "Medium" in the font picker, the preview shows the correct weight until I click Apply. At that point, Bold is selected, and applied to my document.

There doesn't appear to be any way to select a Medium-weight font.

This is with up-to-date karmic, Inkscape 0.47pre4 r22446, built Oct 14 2009.

Confirmed with an up-to-date Lucid as well. GIMP and other programs do not share this problem. I'vebeen reduced to uninstalling bold font variants so that I can use medium-weight fonts

Do you still have the problem to select 'Medium' as font weight with Inkscape 0.48 or a recent development build? Additional weights have been added in r9332:

Or can you provide more information about the font in question so that others who have the same font installed can test in Inkscape 0.48 or a later development build?

Problem seems to be solved in trunk. E.g. light and condensed variants can be selected.

Reopening - no longer works with r12183 (2013-03-08) and later revisions (r12182 and older revisions are ok).

@Tav - any chance you could take a look at the changes introduced in r12183? Font styles like 'Thin', 'Light', 'Ultra-Light', 'Medium', 'Heavy' are no longer rendered on-canvas (the preview in the 'text and Font' dialog OTOH is correct).

Fonts tested: 'Averia Libre', 'Comfortaa', 'Copperplate', 'DejaVu Sans', 'Diavlo', 'Helvetica', 'Lato', 'M+', 'Source Code Pro', 'Source Sans Pro', 'Ubuntu' and a couple more.

Reproduced on OS X 10.7 (X11- as well as Quartz-backend), and Ubuntu 12.10 (VM, 64bit).

I am seeing problems now even after I tried reverting the changes from r12183. I will have a closer look at it but probably not till next week.

Pango has a bug where a font descriptor such as "Delicious 500 Italic" results in the font-family being set to "Delicious, 500". r12183 was an incorrect work-around for this bug. r12246 is hopefully a better fix. r12246 also fixes a bug with font-stretch where some stretch values were being written out with an underline rather than a dash ('semi_expanded' instead of the correct CSS value 'semi-expanded'.
