Bug Description

Inkscape-0.47-1.LEOPARD+.dmg
X11-2.4.0.dmg
mac PPC 10.5.8

When Inkscape opens, there are only boxes. My username is "NIH\dgarboczi". Yes, with a backslash. When I create a new user Inkscape opens with characters, not boxes.

Console:

the next error:

is most likely the result of an unescaped '\' in your username.

@Michael - I was just thinking about the 'libclearlooks.so: Mach-O bundle i386' issue when I assigned the bug to you - hoping that a new package with a universal variant of the ClearLooks engine could fix the problem. But it seems like this is an issue compounded with invalid configuration files in '~/.inkscape-etc'.

You're right, that library isn't universal. How is it we have not noticed this problem before?

It's a problem with the Macports gtk2-clearlooks port not correctly building universal. I'll see if I can figure out what is going on...

I've filed a bug with Macports:
https://trac.macports.org/ticket/23850

For the moment I've manually fixed my version to be universal. When I shortly start building some daily packages I will get you to test one of these and make sure it works correctly.

@Dave - could you test a recent development snapshot from <http://inkscape.modevia.com/macosx-snap/?C=M;O=D> and attach the console output if Inkscape still crashes? The bundled gtk2-clearlooks library now is universal (PPC,i386), possible issues due to '\' in the username have not yet been addressed.

su_v (suv-lp) wrote :

@Michael - why don't we use 'gtk-engines2' instead of the port 'gtk2-clearlooks'? AFAIU 'gtk-engines2' contains a maintained version of 'Clearlooks' from gnome.org whereas the sources of the port 'gtk2-clearlooks' from sourceforge.net are no longer updated. The portfile for 'gtk-engines2' appears to get updated with new releases from gnome.org.

This would requires some changes in osx-app.sh since the script explicitly tests for the theme 'Clearlooks-Quicksilver' instead of the engine itself (i.e. fails if the theme engine is installed as part of gtk-engines2). Since we bundle a custom theme anyway there's no need for the theme 'Clearlooks-Quicksilver' itself to be installed in MacPorts.

Note: the ports gtk2-clearlooks and gtk-engines2 can't be active at the same time (results in a conflict because they use the same paths and file names when activated).

Inkscape opens ok and does not crash, but fonts are missing. Console
reports that Pango couldn't start. Backslash in username is being
fixed at this end.

Possibly we have some issues with the backslash in your username. Snow Leopard won't even let me create users with account names with a backslashes in them like "NIH\dgarboczi". How was this done?

@~suv - Nice catch! I didn't realise about "gtk-engines2". The r9199 package is built using that instead of gtk-clearlooks. I've also updated the osx-app script to check for "gtk-engines2" instead too.

I don't know how to make a username with a special character. But
the IT team here has changed their protocols and the special
character is being removed.

Closing - the Mac OS X package of Inkscape 0.48 includes a newer version of the GTK+ theme engine 'Clearlooks' with arch PPC and i386.

Account name issue with unexpected special character ('\') was not reproducible (not allowed in account names on Snow Leopard), and had been addressed on the user's side.

Note: When building newer application bundles, one might consider to install pango with the variant '+builtin_modules' [1] (no more rewriting of pango module paths is required because the modules are built into pango statically, and '~/.inkscape-etc/pangorc' can likely be dropped (AFAIU pangox.alias is not relevant for gtk apps) - thus reducing potential issues with unexpected special characters not properly handled in the regex used with sed).

Feel free to reopen if you think this report was closed in error.
