Bug Description

The new version 0.47 is not recognizing my Wacom tablet correctly. Whilst the tablet and pen is recognised for the menus and selecting tools etc, It doesn't work with the tools. That said I have experienced some faulty anomalous operation with the calligraphy tool, however pressure support doesn't seem to be working and it stops working completely if the window is de-focused for any reason. So this partial operability is intermittent and unpredictable. So is effectively totally unusable.

I have an old Wacom pen Partner (CT-405-R) and am running Windows XP professional. Admittedly my pad is a little old but it works perfectly with Illustrator, CorelDraw, Photoshop, GIMP, Paintshop pro and all other programs which support a Wacom tablet. I've also noted from existing bug reports this also seems to be a problem with the newer Bamboo tablets as well. However I thought I'd best file this as a new bug since I have an older tablet, although I suspect it's probably the same bug.

I also had problems with tablet recognition in v0.46 however in that case I found as long as I hold the stylus over the tablet when starting the program it will recognise the tablet and pen and works great. And indeed I have found Inkscape 0.46 a very useful program.

Since I've been unable to get this new version 0.47 working with my Wacom tablet I have un-installed it and re-installed v0.46. Since without tablet support v0.47 is of no use to me. Because drawing freehand with the calligraphy tool is my primary use so without pressure support unfortunately this new version is of no use to me.

Have you configured your tablet in File>Input Devices in 0.47?

No I didn't get that far. I un-installed v0.47 and reinstalled v.46. Maybe I should give it another try.

Well good news. Thanks for the suggestion regarding configuring the input devices. :)

Having now reinstalled v0.47 to give it a another try. I took a look at the Input Devices dialog and found the problem seems to have been caused by the eraser stylus being set to "disabled" by default. I set both the pressure stylus and eraser stylus to "screen" and found the pen then worked fine.

I have since saved these settings closed and restarted the program and my Wacom pad now seems to be recognized automatically by default and seems to be working fine . So touch wood it looks like my problem is fixed. But obviously if I have this problem again I know how to fix it now.

That said, obviously it would be better if it worked properly by default rather than having to reconfigure things :)

Inkscape .47 is inconsistent in recogonizing my Intous 3 tablet. Under File>Input Devices the wacom tablet is often not listed( no extended input device) , if the Wacom tablet is listed everything works as expected. A reboot will sometimes correct the problem. Sometimes many reboots are required.

The Wacom Intous 3 tablet works on all other software, Gimp, CorelPaint/Draw, Photoshop, etc. Running under Windows Professional XP SP2

Hi Jerry
I don't know if this will be any help in solving your problem.

However one thing I have found since successfully getting v 0.47 to recognise my tablet and saving the changes is initially it only worked consistently if I started the program with the same program shortcut icon in my start menu I had used when I made the changes and this was the new start-up shortcut 0.47 had created when I installed it.

However I noticed if I used a different shortcut, and in fact I still had the program shortcut which had been installed with v 0.46 since I tend to sort my start menu program groups so it didn’t get removed, it wouldn't recognise my tablet if I used that old shortcut so the problem would return.

I’ve since overwritten the old shortcut and replaced it with the new one so can’t compare the difference. However I notice I still get problems when I use the short-cut in the quick launch menu to start Inkscape. I notice when I check the properties of the new program shortcut it says in the settings Start in: "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share" whereas the properties for the Quick Launch shortcut says Start in: "C:\Program Files\Inkscape" So it seems the program will only consistently recognise my tablet if the shortcut is set to start Inkscape in "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share"

This may be what’s causing the inconsistency you are experiencing. I would imagine any settings saved for one’s tablet would be stored at C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share so it appears the program shortcuts have to be set to start the program in that folder.

The other thing I have noticed with Inkscape is I could force it to recognise my tablet in the File>Input Devices by holding the stylus over the tablet whilst the program is starting. Once it’s recognized you can at least make changes to the settings to get it working and save the changes. However from what I have since found the changes only seem to stick if the program shortcuts are set to start Inkscape in “C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share”

Well I don't know if that will solve your problem however it seems to have solved the inconsistency problems I have been experiencing and v 0.47 is now working quite well for me so hopefully this will also solve you problems.

Artberry,

Thanks for the information. I noticed the odds were much better if I held the stylus of the tablet but I also had a program shortcut installed with v 0.46 with same properties as yours. I have changed the short cut to start in: "C:\Program Files\Inkscape\share".

This seems to have fixed my problem. Many thanks It as started several times correctly with or without having the stylus over the tablet. Yes v 0.47 is great, I love it.
