Bug Description

When I first noticed that I could not work the Italic button, I assumed as much as described in bug #170801, that this needs to be generated by applying an effect, rather than having a ttf file with that variation. I had to hunt around for a font that did work, since there is no indication of what is available.

However, I found that using the pop-up dialog box that appears from clicking the "T" icon at the top of the window *will* let me select Bold, Italic, or both, and it does work!

So it's not a matter of not "doing" it, but a UI issue in that the buttons don't work. (the buttons that appear at the top next to the font, size, and directionality when the text tool is active). This pop-up also works differently in that the effect is applied to the whole object, not just to the selected text.

I'm using Windows XP. Perhaps the way these fonts are enumerated/specified/detected is a portability problem.

I can confirm that this bug also exists in Inkscape 0.47 under Ubuntu Linux 9.10. This was not an issue in Inkscape 0.46, and I *think* that it was also not an issue in the 0.47~pre4-0ubuntu1 version currently in the Ubuntu 9.10 repositories (but I can't remember).

I installed compiled my copy from source; it's version 0.47 r22583.

I cannot reproduce this issue on Windows 7 running 0.47, nor Ubuntu Lucid running 0.47 or current bzr. The buttons work as expected on both platforms.

drdan14, by the way, we switched to bzr on launchpad a couple months ago, so you may want to checkout a current revision to see if it's any different.

In parts reproduced with Inkscape 0.47 and Inkscape 0.47+devel r9058 on OS X 10.5.8

sometimes the toolbar button fails, but the keyboard shortcut 'Ctrl+b' works
sometimes the toolbar button fails, but both the keyboard shortcut and 'Text and Fonts…' dialog work
sometimes both the toolbar button and keyboard shortcut fail but the 'Text and Fonts…' allows to change the font style.

The behavior seems inconsistent to me and I have not been able to pin-point the cause (maybe a certain font format, a specific setting in the TTF or OTF font file, a missing style attribute on <text> or <tspan>, or …?). Usually the text for which the 'Bold' button fails is initially rendered bold and cannot be un-bolded with the toolbar button.

I am experiencing this bug on Windows 7 with Inkscape 0.47 stable release (r22583, built Nov 21 2009).

The Ctrl+b is a useful workaround. I wasn't aware of that before. The buttons rarely work for me, but they do occasionally behave as expected.

I confirm that bug exists. When the text tool "A" is active the toolbar buttons Bold and Italic doesn't work. Ctrl-b and Ctrl-i works and dialog box (Ctrl-Shift-T or "T" icon) works

I have the same problem; also, sometimes nothing works. I can see the bold version of the text in the text properties window but it is not applied to the text object. Also, for some manually installed fonts (ubuntu 10.10, inkscape 0.48), italics work, but the bold version of the font won't even show in the text properties window.

I just found, that the text is but affected. When I export a seemingly regular text object as pdf and select "change font to path", the text is rendered bold

Tobias: Do you have a specific (free) font where that last behavior is reproducible with?

As per bug #575831, the bold/italic buttons have been replaced by a list of font style variants available for the selected font family. If you can reproduce the issue with the new dropdown list, please reopen this issue.
