Bug Description
When I first noticed that I could not work the Italic button, I assumed as much as described in bug #170801, that this needs to be generated by applying an effect, rather than having a ttf file with that variation. I had to hunt around for a font that did work, since there is no indication of what is available.
However, I found that using the pop-up dialog box that appears from clicking the "T" icon at the top of the window *will* let me select Bold, Italic, or both, and it does work!
So it's not a matter of not "doing" it, but a UI issue in that the buttons don't work. (the buttons that appear at the top next to the font, size, and directionality when the text tool is active). This pop-up also works differently in that the effect is applied to the whole object, not just to the selected text.
I'm using Windows XP. Perhaps the way these fonts are enumerated/

I can confirm that this bug also exists in Inkscape 0.47 under Ubuntu Linux 9.10. This was not an issue in Inkscape 0.46, and I *think* that it was also not an issue in the 0.47~pre4-0ubuntu1 version currently in the Ubuntu 9.10 repositories (but I can't remember).
I installed compiled my copy from source; it's version 0.47 r22583.
