Bug Description

Ok I just tested the latest pre4 build, and in Snow Leopard, it seems that I'm unable to copy and paste objects anymore. Can someone confirm?

Does 'unable to copy and paste objects' mean
a) the clipboard stays empty?
b) the copied objects are always pasted as bitmap images?

in case of b)
Can you compare your X11/XQuartz preferences for the syncing of the X11 clipboard with the OS X pasteboard to the settings described the FAQ <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Copying_and_pasting_in_Inkscape_creates_pixellated_images_instead_of_copying_the_vector_objects> or to this X11 Preferences dialog screenshot: <http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3627#p17000> and test if it works for you with those settings?

Could be a duplicate of bug #307005.

I am familiar with the bug of it being pasted as bitmap...

I don't know how to view the clipboard, but here's what happened. I opened my fresh download of pre4, I made a square, I tried to copy, I tried to paste, and nothing happened. Then, I made a new document, I made a triangle, I copied it, and I pasted it, and this time it pasted, but it pasted as a bitmap IN A DIFFERENT SIZE AND ORIENTATION from the original. When I tried copying future objects, different shapes (including other triangles of different colors), it kept on re-pasting that first triangle. Even after closing and re-opening Inkscape. So... I don't know what's going on, but it certainly seems that copy and pasting issues have gotten worse and not better.

ALSO: I unchecked the "update pasteboard" preferences thing and the problem seems to have gone away.

Setting report to status 'Confirmed' as there have been two other independent reports of copy&paste stopping to work on Snow Leopard (besides the known bitmap copy issue):

Bug #477363 “Copy and paste stops working”:
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/477363>
Question 91485: “paste stopped working”:
<https://answers.launchpad.net/inkscape/+question/91485>

This is most likely an upstream issue in Xquartz, but it needs to be investigate on Inkscape's side as well IMHO.

I'm also concerned by the problem,
using Inkscape 0.47 with Mac OS 10.6 no copy/paste at all
tested with two different computers

For me it's a critical bug,
I don't know you, but I can't use Inkscape without copy/paste :(

No problem with the GIMP with the same configuration (same version of X11...)

Help requested :)

@Mathieu - do you mean that changing the X11 preferences as described in the FAQ - see comment #1 above - did *not* work for you and copy&paste still fails despite disabling the pasteboard syncing feature of X11?

@~suv thanks a lot - changing the X11 preference works fine for you.
Sorry to have bothered you ...
A link next to the dmg download could have been useful...

The current solution to this problem is the same as described in the FAQ <http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/FAQ#Copying_and_pasting_in_Inkscape_creates_pixellated_images_instead_of_copying_the_vector_objects>: changing the X11 preferences as seen on this screenshot: <http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36209214/XQuartz-clipboard-preferences.png> will restore copy&paste in Inkscape running on Snow Leopard.

The underlying issue is most likely the same that causes bug #307005 “[OS X] copy & paste inserts a bitmap copy instead of the vector object”.

@birdsaregood - do you still experience this issue with current versions of XQuartz (2.7.3)? IIRC similar issues have been repeatedly discussed on the X11/Xquartz user mailing lists (unrelated to Inkscape), and might have been addressed in XQuartz in the meantime.

Note: Personally, I never experienced the described failure to copy&paste objects within Inkscape with any version of Apple's X11 or with XQuartz (on Mac OS X 10.5.8, and on OS X 10.7.x). Occasionally (on Lion), copying text content from a X11-based application back to a native application failed, but worked again after relaunching X11. I can't recall this happening at all after having upgraded to use the latest releases of XQuartz from <http://xquartz.macosforge.org> (on Lion).

Closing due to lack of feedback. Feel free to reopen the report if this still happens (repeatedly) with current XQuartz versions (2.7.4 is the latest, available for Snow leopard and later versions of OS X).
