Bug Description

If you go into the Tools/Text portion of Preferences, it lets have Inkscape set the default stroke and fill information for text objects. But there is no way to specify the default font info. I think that all font data should be provided including: face, size, direction, line spacing, weight, italics, etc. Each option should allow the user to specify "use previous object". There should also be a way to fill those selections using the current selection.

It is possible to set some (all except direction AFAICT) of the font properties you requested through the Text menu on the toolbar. Maybe those options should be mirrored to Inkscape Text tool preferences?

See Bug 234618 WIN: Default font issue (Bitstream Vera Sans hell) - https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/234618

Basically, 0.47 appears to have a bug preventing the default font info from being saved (or remembered?).

@Will - do you mean what I tried to describe in comment 5 of bug #407893: "Text Tool attributes messed up.”?

"2) preference set to 'Last used style'

- inconsistency when changing font/size in tool controls bar
I think my issue is that a click on the empty canvas reverts the selected font family in the controls bar to the current default font which is not the same as the last used font. As soon as I type text, the selected font family switches back to the last used font family. This is confusing because you can't see the name of the current font before actually typing text."

The default font BTW can be set in the 'Text and Font…' dialog. It is stored in the preferences but not hooked up as GUI option in the 'Preferences > Tools > Text' section.

That bug is similar, but not a perfect match to the one I mentioned, When I select start a text object, the font already shows the Bitstream Vera Sans font mentioned. The size is commonly 32 in the combo box, but I get 12 from the get go. If I change the font, the size combo does show the size actually in use, but not until then.

I have also seen cases in which 0.47 let me change the line height from the 125% default to 100%, but wouldn't let it actually take effect. I can't reproduce that one. When it did happen, I was unable to select anything less than 100% at all. Restarting Inkscape might have solved that problem. So Inkscape might have just gotten sick.
