Bug Description

Hello,
the toolbox on the left doesn't display all the tools. This is an important usability issue. Also, detaching it from the window won't make it resizable. With latest inkscape I can't see at least 4 tools. More over, the 4 tools I can't see (Text, Connector, Gradient and Dropper) are more used by me than spirals, 3d boxes, zoom and tweak. The best thing, for me, is to be able to customize the toolbox size (something like gnome-panel does).

You don't get a menu item which lists all tools that can't be displayed?

The icon size can be controlled with GTK+ (icon) theme settings.

Also, if you're referring to a recent SVN version, you can adjust their size via inkscape preferences. So the main usability problem isn't an issue. Being able to fully tweak the bars is a plus, thus living this report open as wishlist...

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Triaged
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
summary: - Toolbox must have smaller icons
+ Customizable toolbox

~suv: that's really annoying, don't you think so? even gimp avoids that by using more columns for tools
Luca: yes I thought it didn't work, instead I had to restart the program. Could you please add (requires restart) to it, just like the option above?

No, it's already a big improvement compared to 0.46 and allows me to select all tools with the mouse (besides the keyboard shortcuts). For me it works - I'd rather see development invested in other areas - e.g. in geometric / technical drawing aids with corresponding ui elements.

@Luca and Luca - your identical screen names confuse me ;-)

I just want to update on this. It's really, really irritating to have hidden items, especially when many of the ones that are most accessible are the most unlikely to be used. How many users use "Create 3D boxes," "Spirals," and "Spray objects" on a regular basis? As opposed to the gradient editor or the color dropper.

I'm not using a particularly low resolution (it's a latop -- 1280 x 800 is pretty common). I can shrink the buttons but now I still have a million options, and shrinking doesn't actually help all that much. Plus now everything is microscopic.

I think UI improvements are pretty important and being able to disable menu tools or re-order them would be a HUGE boon to the program. As it is, it feels amateurish. With every update I get a million more filters I'll never use, but the basic UI is still uncustomizable to a large degree and somewhat thoughtless arranged. :-/

What we want is : better ordering by default, custom ordering if you're not happy with it
