This isn't a must have function really, and if implemented, it should be an extension, not a core feature.

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Confirmed

This isn't a must???
Have you read the book? A tool like that are very useful to create hight quality design. The actual motif tool are not good because it's very complicate to create a beautiful motif with it. This tool just clone the picture, nothing more.

Heh, I actually read a few books on oriental patterns. Does it count? Are we talking about making Inkscape a specialized tool to design pattern based rugs? :)

Could you please elaborate what exactly you want to see implemented?

I was talking about de motif (pattern) tool. With this tool we can paint a motif (pattern) on a draw. But, we have absolutely no contrôl of the position of element who compose the pattern. The pattern are like cars on a parking. With the clone tool, we have more contrôl... but the clone tool are not the motif (pattern) tool. We can not paint on a draw with this tool. And, we can non take the pictures of the pattern, select a positioning grid and paint a draw.

I don't know if you understand. I'm french canadian (form Québec) speaker and I a try to explain my idea in english, it's not easy.

I don't talk about making Inkscape a specialized tool to design pattern based rugs. I'm just talking about a toll to create a pattern in a draw with a positioning grid and more than one part of pattern without have to cut anything like if you create a pattern on the paper with a pen or a brush.

To create parts of the pattern, we can use the actual function of Inkscape.

This type of tool are very useful to create beautiful background for a web site, draw flowers on the draw of a skirt, etc. The pattern tool are already there, why not improve it?

An other option who can be interesting is a toll to deform the pattern on the draw to keep the natural form of what we have dray. If we create a pattern to pent a beach ball, in can be very useful to deform the pattern to have the curve of the ball. If we create a motif of fish scale, gives the form of the fish will gives very hight quality result.

Note: If we create a motif (pattern) of fish scale with the actual motif (pattern) tool, it will be ugly because the scale will look like a bad quality wallpaper like the wallpaper of Windows 95.

This an example of positioning grid. We can create ours own grid depend of what type of pattern we want to create.
