Bug Description

I've seen in other tablet threads that devs would like more details about tablets being used.

I was wondering it there is an area to report this info or a standard format the devs would like this info in.
like make/model and functionality observed.
For example I've got:

Wacom graphire
model CTE-440
wacom tablet software vers. 4.90-3

under winxp sp3

on inscape 0.46 stable;

input device dialog box reports the existence of the tablet
axes tab lists various items but none are selectable.
keys tab is a blank grey box

pressure sensitivity of pen works when drawing
eraser end of pen just works as a pen with no sensitivity (like a mouse)
pen tilt - does not apply to this model tablet
pen angle - does not apply to this model tablet

on the precompiled dev build Inkscape20697-0902142327.7z Feb. 14 '09

input device dialog box reports the existence of the tablet
axes tab lists various items but none are selectable.
keys tab is a blank grey box

The pen does not work for drawing.
the pen can select menu items, tool buttons, and moves the cursor in and around the drawing area; but is unable to draw anything with any of the tools.
the same applies to the eraser end of the pen.

Same for me. I can finally move around the mouse cursor and choose things in the menus, unlike in 0.46 where it just froze the cursor when loading Inkscape, but drawing or moving around objects still doesn't work.

Same problem with Wacom Intuos3 tablet under Windows XP Media Center Edition.
I am using the precompiled dev build Inkscape21502-0906061949

Cursor works fine on menus, but I can't draw anything.

First off, please test against a pre-release for 0.47 which you can find via a news article on our homepage. Windows users, it sounds strange, but please launch the application with your tablet pen. Check to see if you can draw with it. If not, go into Input Devices in the File menu and ensure that your tablet pen is actually enabled in there. Please report back if there is any difference.

XP Pro 32 SP3

Inkscape 0.47-3 r22583 Nov 21 2009

Aiptek Slim USB tablet (rebadged 'Medion' model MD 85637)

Tablet works fine in the GIMP ver 2.6.7 without configuration.

Tablet worked in Inkscape 0.46 without any configuration. It shows up as 'Aiptek Tablet Pressure Stylus' in "Input Devices". Preferences file attached for comparison (046_preferences.xml).

I uninstalled 0.46, tracked down and removed every trace of it I could find, then installed 0.47:

Test 1.

Start Inkscape with mouse; use toolbars, menus; draw with mouse; close Inkscape, restart Inkscape (with the mouse); no problem.

Test 2.

Start Inkscape with mouse. Use toolbars and menus with mouse or pen; draw with mouse, can't draw with pen. Close Inkscape, restart Inkscape (with the mouse), no problem (except the no drawing issue).

Test 3.

Start Inkscape with the pen, use toolbars and menus, can't draw with the pen. Close Inkscape, restart, no problem (except the no drawing issue).

Test 4.

Start Inkscape with the pen, go to 'Input Devices'. The field which says "Aiptek Tablet.... ' in 0.46 is now filled with gibberish. The 'Mode' field says 'screen'. Click on the gibberish twice; this will change the 'Mode' field to 'disabled'. Change it back to 'screen', click 'save' and 'close'. Pen can draw on canvas. Close Inkscape. Restarting Inkscape produces an error:

"The preferences file C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\inkscape\preferences.xml is not a valid XML document.
Inkscape will run with default settings, and new settings will not be saved."

Deleting preferences.xml fixes this, but only until one configures the pen again.

Preferences files attached for comparison (047_pre_tablet_preferences.xml,
047_post_tablet_preferences.xml)

Workaround to get autosave to work...

1) Find and delete C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\inkscape\preferences.xml
2) Start Inkscape.
3) Go to -> preferences, -> save, set autosave.
4) Close Inkscape.
5) Restart Inkscape.
6) Configure tablet.

(Note this may not be possible on low-end Vista because it locks \application data\ but it's worth a try.)

Marking duplicate of bug #403421 "Wacom Bamboo Tablet on Windows, pen tool works on toolbars but not on the document". Don't hesitate to comment if you think it's a different issue.
